Donald Sultan American, b. 1951

Overview
"The closer you work from reality the more abstract things can get." - Donald Sultan

Donald Sultan (b. 1951) is a renowned American artist recognized for redefining still life and landscape through industrial materials and techniques. After receiving his MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago, Sultan emerged in New York’s 1970s art scene as a key figure in the "New Image" movement. His distinctive process using tar, vinyl, and linoleum on masonite, blurs boundaries between painting and sculpture with a minimalist yet monumental aesthetic.

Sultan’s large-scale compositions often depict flowers, fruits, and disasters in bold, abstract forms. His works have been exhibited globally and are held in major museums and private collections. He continues to live and work in New York and Sag Harbor, exploring the contrast between natural beauty and urban grit.
