Per Mårtensson Swedish, b. 1969
Overview
"...in a subtle and accomplished manner – and with a pinch of humour – [Per Martensson] depicts and examines the notion of representation in current and historical art practice through his paintings and installations." - Beckers Art Award Jury
Per Martensson (b. 1969) is a contemporary artist whose work explores the boundaries between abstraction and representation through the medium of painting. Known for his precise, layered compositions, Martensson investigates the flat picture plane while drawing on visual cues from urban environments, design, and art history. His practice often incorporates a restrained palette and minimalist forms, creating works that are both conceptually rich and visually refined. Since his debut at Malmö Konsthall in 1997, he has exhibited widely in Sweden, the United States, and Switzerland, including at Moderna Museet and Richard Levy Gallery. Martensson lives and works in Sweden, where he continues to develop a body of work that challenges perception and engages with the legacy of modernist painting.
