Mark Stock American, 1951-2014
“I like to paint the moment just before or just after something happens.” -Mark Stock
Mark Stock (1951-2014) was a multifaceted American artist celebrated for his evocative narrative paintings. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, and raised across various U.S. states, Stock earned his BA from the University of South Florida, studying under Theo Wujcik. He began his career as a master lithographer at Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles, printing for legends like Jasper Johns and Roy Lichtenstein.
Stock's artistic journey expanded into ballet, set design, and jazz drumming, but he gained widespread recognition for his moody, cinematic paintings that often explored themes of obsession and voyeurism. His work has been featured in major institutions including MoMA and the Brooklyn Museum, and even inspired films such as The Butler's in Love, directed by David Arquette.
