Caio Fonseca American, b. 1959

Overview
"I'm not particularly interested in painting, per se. I'm interested in a painting that has that mysterious life to it." -Caio Fonseca
Caio Fonseca (b. 1959) is an American painter celebrated for his lyrical abstractions and masterful use of tonal harmony. Raised in New York City's West Village, he studied in Barcelona under Augusto Torres and later worked in Uruguay, Paris, and Pietrasanta, Italy. Through these experiences his artistic voice was shaped. Fonseca's compositions blend musical structure with painterly intuition, creating works that feel both spontaneous and rigorously composed. His paintings are held in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He maintains studios in Manhattan and Tuscany, continuing a transatlantic practice rooted in both tradition and innovation.
