Lynda Benglis American, b. 1941
Overview
"My work is an expression of space. What is the experience of moving? Is it pictorial? Is it an object? Is it a feeling? It all comes from my body." - Lynda Benglis
Lynda Benglis (b. 1941) is an American sculptor celebrated for her innovative use of materials like wax, latex, metal, and foam, creating dynamic, poured sculptural forms. Since the 1960s, her work has explored materiality and process while confronting femininity in a male-dominated art world. In addition to her sculptural practice, Benglis has worked with video and photography, including her provocative 1974 Artforum advertisement that challenged gender norms in art. Today, her works are held in major institutions like MoMA and LACMA, and she continues to push artistic boundaries while living and working between New York, NY, Santa Fe, NM, and Ahmedabad, India.
