David Geiser American, 1948-2020
"David Geiser's work is about transforming matter into spirit." -Peter Selz
David Geiser (1947–2020) was an American artist who began his career in San Francisco’s underground comix scene. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he transitioned to abstract painting, developing a distinctive mixed-media style. His works often incorporated unconventional materials like tar, rope, and shellac to evoke primal, organic energy. Geiser eventually settled in East Hampton with actress Mercedes Ruehl, continuing to create until his death. His career spanned the subversive to the sublime, leaving a fiercely original legacy.
