Richard Serra American, 1938-2024
"Everything we choose in life for its lightness soon reveals its unbearable weight.” - Richard Serra
Richard Serra (1938–2024) was a groundbreaking American sculptor renowned for his monumental steel sculptures that redefined the relationship between art, space, and viewer. Born in San Francisco, Serra studied English literature before turning to visual art, earning his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Yale University. Early work in steel mills deeply influenced his material sensibility, leading to a career centered on industrial materials and site-specific installations.
A leading figure in Postminimalism and Process Art, Serra’s works, such as Tilted Arc and The Matter of Time, are known for their physical presence and immersive scale. His sculptures invite viewers to move through and around them, transforming perception and spatial awareness. Over his six-decade career, Serra exhibited internationally and received numerous honors, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale and the Praemium Imperiale.
